Your True Match

Finding a good foundation is easy, finding one that is affordable while on a tight budget and just moving into a new apartment in a new state is another matter. After graduating from Auburn University I had to make some adjustments to my budget and decided that now would be a good time to find a fabulous drugstore foundation that I could use on a daily basis, at least for a few months until I had my expenses under control. After a lot of online research and talking with friends I ended up with a bottle of L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Foundation.

Now, I had tried a number of other brands including Rimmel, Physician’s Formula, and Maybeline. However, L’Oreal won out for a number of reasons. Firstly, they offered a shade that matched my skintone. I am incredibly pale. I wear shade 01 in Chanel and even that is a little dark in winter. Needless to say, a lot of what I tried turned orange on me. However, when I tested out three different True Match shades I landed on shade N1, Soft Ivory. It matched perfectly, and this was late fall.

In addition to the shade matching I also liked the natural finish of the foundation. When I put it on (which was a bit difficult because of the glass pour bottle construction) it felt like it would be very heavy. But after a few minutes it seemed to absorb into my skin nicely and looked very natural, even after a full 8 hour work day. What was great was that it also covered all my redness and didn’t break me out (even after wearing it every day for three months). It also contains sunscreen which is essential for anyone living in South Carolina with skin as pale as mine. (I am completely incapable of tanning…but I can burn like nobody’s business.)

The only downside was the packaging. In addition to being difficult to use, it looked cheap and as a graphic designer it’s VERY hard for me to use anything that isn’t aesthetically pleasing while sitting on my vanity. However, I was able to work my way around this little dilemma by pealing off the sticker labels, which left me with a very pretty modern glass bottle that looked right at home next to my higher end cosmetics.

    1. Hi Bhavika! I know exactly how you feel. I’ll normally buy three shades – one that I think is perfect, and one shade lighter (if there is one) and darker. Once I can try them at home in natural light I’ll keep the one that works and return the others. Thankfully Ulta and Target let you return open foundations if you have a receipt!
